Position: GIS Technician

The Doig River First Nation (DRFN) is a Treaty 8 Nation with consultation areas in British Columbia and Alberta. The DRFN is seeking a GIS Technician to assist the Lands Department with consultation activities, especially activities within Alberta. Applicants must be willing to live in north-eastern BC, arrange transportation to and from work, and be able to liaise with DRFN community members, staff, and peers in government and industry. Applications demonstrating programming skills, familiarity with QGIS, and/or competency in developing a web map server will be preferred.
Overview of Responsibilities
- Assisting in consultation activities on land and resource development projects that are within DRFN Treaty territory;
- Providing business knowledge around GIS datasets (access, content/attributes);
- Efficient performance of GIS analysis and map production;
- Presenting data with GIS software and
- Documentation, quality control, and incremental improvement over time.
Requirements
- Post-secondary education with a degree or diploma in a relevant discipline;
- Minimum of 3 years of directly related experience (ideally in Alberta forestry or other applicable resource industry);
- Broad understanding and implementation of land management concepts and practices;
- Excellent problem solving skills, initiative, and an intuitive ability (analytics using math/basic statistics will be required);
- A professional, friendly and courteous manner (service & team oriented);
- Experience in support of strategic land use planning in Alberta;
- Familiarity with AVI and other Alberta GIS datasets;
- Strong organizational skills and technical writing skills;
- Self-directed, flexible and an ability to work under limited direct supervision;
- Time management and organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines while being flexible to accommodate shifting priorities;
The successful candidate will work in a beautiful, modern facility located north-east of Fort St. John in Doig River, BC. It takes approximately 45 minutes to drive to the community from Fort St. John on mostly paved roads. This position will be under the direction of the GIS Manager. The DRFN currently has 10 staff working in the Lands Department, as well as various consultants when needed. GIS support is also needed by other departments on occasion.
