Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre – Research Assistant


Selkirk College is seeking an individual to serve in the role of Research Assistant in the Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre (SGRC).  Working under the direction of the SGRC Coordinator, the position primarily includes applied research project work that integrates both geographic information system and internet mapping technologies. The Research Assistant will provide project support to the research team on a range of projects. As such, along with geomatics expertise, the successful applicant will possess knowledge and experience in applied research.

The SGRC is a leading edge instructional and research facility focused on geomatics technologies.  Built on a foundation of partnerships, the SGRC’s mandate includes training, research, and application development.

The ideal candidate will hold a minimum of an Advanced Diploma or equivalent in Geographic Information Systems and experience with interactive web-mapping application development.  Preference will be given to candidates who possess higher credentials and work experience with current versions of the following vendor specific applications: ESRI Desktop and Server GIS, MS Silverlight and /or .Net customization, JavaScript, PostGreSQL and / or Oracle relational database management systems.  Programming experience using Python, .Net and SQL is required.  Other web development experience, including with HTML, Flash, and Google Maps API, will also be considered. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, time management, and project management skills and have demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team, as well as the initiative to maintain professional currency and adapt to new technologies.   

This is a short term up to 100% appointment commencing October 1, 2012 and planned to April 30, 2013. This position is not base funded and will be reviewed pending funding of research projects in the SGRC.  Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement.
