GIS TECHNICIAN/PROGRAMMER

The Doig River First Nation, a progressive Dane-zaa community in Northeastern B.C. with lands in Alberta, is seeking an experienced self motivated individual who is willing to learn, build capacity and thrive on challenge while working in a team environment.

The Chief and Council are seeking a GIS Technician/Programmer to further the design and development of our Land Information Management System (LIM). The LIM is used to document resources and activities within the Doig River Traditional Territory in NE British Columbia and NW Alberta. The successful applicant will assist Lands Staff by developing tools (primarily using ArcGIS) to streamline the consultation review process. Other responsibilities include:
  • Management of incoming consultation referrals into LIM and GIS technology.
  • Integration of cultural heritage information into GIS Technology by utilizing audio and visual mediums;
  • Support of the Treaty Land Entitlement Process;
  • Maintain and update datasets as new information is gathered;
  • Development and implementation of cumulative impact assessment, ecosystem mapping, wildlife capability mapping, forest cover analysis, and drainage mapping;
  • Liaise government staff, including the BC Oil & Gas Commission & the Treaty 8 Tribal Association.
  • Provide written and oral progress reports to Lands Manager, Chief and Council and community.
Qualifications:
  • GIS Diploma with five yrs experience or Bachelors of Science Degree in GIS with 2 yrs experience;
  • Several years of direct experience in a Land and Resource Management environment;
  • Previous experience working with First Nations desirable;
  • Proficiency with ArcMap and other ESRI technologies;
  • Programming experience preferable Java;
  • Experience with uDig an asset;
  • Thorough understanding of relational data base concepts;
  • Proven organization, communication and administrative skills;
  • Familiarity with BC and Alberta natural resource tenure referral processes and GIS data formats.
