Maternity Leave Position (12 months)
Background:
The Nature Trust is a leading conservation non-government organization (NGO) in British Columbia based in North Vancouver. Our mission is to acquire, protect, and manage lands of high biodiversity and ecological value throughout the province of BC. Over the last 40 years, The Nature Trust of BC has acquired 61,000 hectares of critical habitat for wildlife, plants, and fish. The Nature Trust relies on both GIS and databases to organize and manage the ecological and administrative information related to each conservation property.
Position:
The Nature Trust of BC is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated GIS Technician to join our conservation team. You will work closely with the Conservation Specialist. Your duties will include responding to a variety of data preparation and mapping requests, along with managing detailed databases. Candidates must have a positive attitude, a constant desire to learn, and must be able to work in a fast paced environment with a focus on quality.
Duties include:
Using ArcGIS for map creation and other graphic products.
Combining practice and experience using GIS principles in solving technical problems, and digital mapping and data management issues.
Ability to work within a geodatabase environment including ArcCatalog.
Maintaining, building, and populating an internal MS Access database with a thorough understanding of relational tables, writing macros, troubleshooting, and the ability to suggest design changes.
Performing data analysis, designing, and producing advanced complex queries.
Assisting colleagues in the preparation of proposals and professional reports, creation of educational materials, and signage.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Technology, diploma, or university level degree with concentration in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology.
Proficiency with ArcGIS Editor 9.2 or higher.
Experience managing, maintaining, and populating geodatabases.
Proficiency with Office 2007 MS Access, including writing macros.
Well-rounded computer and software experience including the Microsoft Office Suite.
Creative and enthusiastic with excellent organizational skills.
Previous work experience in GIS is a definite asset, but entry-level candidates will also be considered.
Salary:
$20.00/hour for a 35 hour work week.
4% holiday pay will be added to the hourly rate.
