Are you a member of an indigenous community? Would you like to comment on the recent designation of the waters along the Pacific Northwest coast as the ‘Salish Sea’?
My name is Brian Tucker and I am a Research Assistant working under the direction of Dr. Reuben Rose-Redwood, an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Victoria, in British Columbia, Canada.
We are currently conducting research on the cultural and political implications of place naming, with a specific focus on the recent designation of the Salish Sea. We seek to document the opinions and perspectives of different groups regarding the Salish Sea, and we are particularly interested in how this new place name is perceived by members of different indigenous communities both in the United
States and Canada.
If you are interested in taking part in this study, you will be asked to participate in an interview session in which I will ask a series of questions, following an open-ended conversational format where you may respond and provide your insight on the topic we are researching. I anticipate the interview to last about 1 hour.
Upon the conclusion of our study, we will contact each of the participants to provide a synopsis of our findings. We also hope to eventually create a publicly-accessible website devoted to
exploring different perspectives on the imaginative geographies of the Salish Sea.
