The Early Child Development Mapping Project (ECMap), a five-year, $12
million project, sponsored and funded by Alberta Education, is being
implemented by a cross-sectoral consortium made up of agencies and
individuals from across the province. The consortium is led by the
Community-University Partnership (CUP) for the Study of Children, Youth
and Families at the University of Alberta. For more information about

This position, located at the downtown campus in Enterprise Square,
10230 Jasper Avenue, reports directly to the Mapping Manager (MM) and is
responsible for the design and creation of mapping products. This
includes data collection (from existing sources), creation, cleaning and
integration. The Mapping Technologist will also be supporting ECMAP’s
Community Development and Mobilization Manager (CDMM) and Community
Development Coordinators (CDC) in the creation of spatial community
boundaries, community asset identification, and specific community
reports, in addition to working closely with the Data Management team to
map early childhood (EDI) and social economic (SES/SEI) data.
Duties
- Provides support for GIS data management; tasks may include creating
spatial community boundaries as defined by CDC’s and CDMM; identifying
community assets with CDC and CDMM, Postal Code Reconciliation, Base
Data acquisition/creation/integration, creation/reconciliation of
project boundaries (ex. school boundaries, etc), and documentation of
data sources (metadata, toolkit, etc.) - Provides support for GIS mapping including creating project required
maps as defined by ECMAP Mapping Strategy, creating base maps and
products for information dissemination as required by CDMM/CDC,
creating mapping products in support of ECMAP communication initiatives
and presentation/paper submissions from ECMAP management team, and
creating additional mapping requests - Provides support for documentation including documenting data and
mapping processes, collaborating on mapping toolkits, and integrating
with the existing social mapping knowledge base - Provides support for the MM including participating in ECMAP project
team meetings, helping monitor map production supplies, assisting with
mapping related presentations and papers, and linking with community
mapping people
Qualifications
- Post secondary certificate with a focus in GIS; undergraduate degree
preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be
considered - Two years of GIS working experience
- Advanced knowledge and demonstrated efficiency using GIS data structures and ESRI ArcGIS ArcView environment
- Experience in various methods of collecting data, data manipulation and mapping within a GIS environment
- Knowledge and experience in tools, scripts, and processes within ArcTools
- Knowledge of data projections
- Knowledge of graphics programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Access, Excel, Word, and Powerpoint
- Experience with social mapping an asset
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently, and collaboratively as a member of a team
- High level of interpersonal skills and ability to network, liaise and connect effectively with a wide range of people
- Demonstrated ability in the use of problem solving and creative thinking skills
