Research Associate Position (Taking Action on Climate Change Program Area)

CIER, the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, is a national First Nation-directed environmental charitable organisation. We offer research, advisory, education and training services to Indigenous communities, governments and private companies in four program areas: taking action on climate change, conserving biodiversity, protecting lands and waters, and building sustainable communities.

Through our Taking Action on Climate Change division, we assist and build skills in First Nations to reduce climate change contributions and increase their adaptive capacity to immediate and predicted climate change impacts.

CIER invites applicants for the position of Research Associate, to assist with environmental projects that include economic elements (e.g. projects related to energy efficiency, renewable energy development or carbon issues). The ideal candidate will have experience in these areas and an interest in working on environmental projects outside of his/her discipline.

Duties include:
• Data/information/market research and/or analysis
• Opportunity identification/development
• Feasibility studies/project piloting
• Developing or analysing business plans
• Assisting with development of ownership structures for energy developments (i.e. cooperatives, co-management, joint ventures)
• Assisting with project implementation (including physical implementation of energy efficiency measures/ retrofits)
• Assisting to develop sustainable entrepreneurships with First Nations
• Travel to remote communities in Canada
• Writing – proposal, reports, communications, etc.

Requirements:
• Minimum four-year degree Bachelor of Commerce, Economics, or related degree and experience (additional degree in an environmental field would be highly desirable)
• Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications
• Demonstrated experience working with First Nations
• Ability to develop and edit well-written reports
• (Desirable) Knowledge of energy developments, energy efficiency and/or carbon related issues

• Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills
• Strong teamwork and communication skills
• Strong organisational, technical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently in a flexible, yet challenging and dynamic work environment

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Although preference will be given to Aboriginal applicants (including First Nations, Métis and Inuit), all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
