Overview: The Food Security community-based mapping project aimsto map agricultural resources in the Cowichan Valley, with emphasis on connecting producers and consumers of food, as well asemergency food resources for people at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum. The mapping process will engagespecific groups as well as the general public in mapping food related features in their local areas that they care aboutand want to see protected. The aim of the project is to provide immediately useable food-related information products(paper maps; web-based interactive maps), as well as baseline information about the state of food security in the CowichanValley.

The project, will involve a total of 5 participants in mapping research,fieldwork, planning and hosting mapping workshops, outreach and communications about the project. The MappingSupervisor will be responsible for supervising and directing the work of the 4 participants, and for projectmanagement/administ ration. This position will report directly to the Executive Director.

Duties: The Mapping Supervisor will be accountable for thefollowing:

Project Management:

* Supervise the work of 4 project assistants; provide training as necessary.
* Participate in weekly staff meetings, providing updates and reports asneeded.
* Coordinate completion of all project deliverables.
* Maintain concise records and documentation including all media related items.
* Write all required reports, prepare budgets, and assist with preparation of financial reports as required.

Food Security Mapping:

* Liaise with mapping resource people, including the GIS department of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, University of Victoria Office of Community-Based Research, Cowichan Community Land Trust, and others.
* Work collaboratively with community-based partners/organizations concerned about food security in the Cowichan Valley in developing data collection protocols and in carrying out the project.
* Develop a data collection protocol which creates accurate mapping of food resources.
* Maintain effective data protection and retrieval protocols (prevent contamination of electronic data and manage meta-data considerations) .
* Produce useful and aesthetically pleasing maps.
* Host mapping workshops to review the mapping products and get community feedback.

Communications:

* Communicate clearly with other staff members, volunteers, partners,sponsors, and community members.
* Keep the Executive Director fully informed on the status of the projecton a weekly basis.

Other Duties:

* Assist with dealing with customers including all inquiries through:
– Phone
– Store – walk ins
– Email.
* Perform other duties as required by the Executive Director.

Personal Development:
* Complete personal development plan including courses to supportcontinuous learning.

Experience and Knowledge:

* Extensive skills and knowledge in project management, mapping, and foodsecurity issues.
* Proven organizational and leadership skills.
* Previous project management and supervisory experience.
* Working knowledge of GIS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
* Two or more years of work at a community non-profit organization

* Organizational Skills: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, andmonitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information andactivities.
* Problem Solving: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gatherand process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and makerecommendations to the Executive Director and/or resolve the problem.

Working Conditions:

* Mapping Supervisor will work in an office environment  as well asother community locations.
* Mapping Supervisor will work on a full time basis of 35 hours paidhours per week, with occasional evenings and weekends.
* This position will be subject to a three month probationary period.
* Personal paid sick leave days of one day per month, not to beaccumulated.
* Overtime to be preapproved and tracked and paid as per attachedagreement (see Schedule 1- Overtime Averaging Agreement).
