Summary of Position
Assists with cetacean research activities including data entry, database management, data analysis and technical writing. Assists with grant writing and grant administration. Plays a primary role in the operation of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network. Runs an educational public outreach program involving developing and updating WEB and exhibit content, preparing newsletter and/or magazine article and making public presentations. Assists with the day-to-day operations of the Cetacean Research Lab, including relief administration of the BC Wild Killer Whale Adoption Program
Job Duties
Assists the Senior Marine Mammal Scientist with research and research support activities.
Manages and maintains a large database of cetacean and sea turtle sighting reports.
Designs and helps conduct marine mammal surveys.
Prepares maps using GIS software.
Analyses spatial data and writes research articles for publication.
Interacts with a diverse group of commercial and professional mariners along the BC coast.
Develops, updates, and revises web content, conducts public lectures, writes magazine articles, provides media briefings.
Develops and maintains professional links with conservation groups, government agencies, ecotourism companies, commercial fishers and sport fishers.
Ensures that research findings and other information from the Cetacean Research Lab are shared in a timely and comprehensive way within the Aquarium.
Education
Post secondary degree in population biology, marine science, geography or a related field.
Knowledge of population biology, data analysis, survey methodology and statistics.
Qualifications
Substantial experience with GIS projects including mapping and data analysis.
Substantial experience with complex databases.
Experience managing project budgets, writing grants and seeking funding sources.
Excellent writing skills, both for scientific and popular articles.
Good public speaking skills.
Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work productively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
Able to liaise and collaborate with BCCSN observers, Aquarium staff, volunteers and Board members, representatives of government agencies, non-profit organizations and research institutions.
Able to occasionally travel to attend off-site meetings, presentations, and boat-based field work in remote conditions.
Boat handling, boat trailering and first aid skills are an asset.
Able to occasionally work evenings or weekends.
Valid BC driver’s licence.
