The Northwest Conservation District is an environmental non-profitorganization serving 34 municipalities in Northwest Connecticut since1953. We are dedicated to the conservation and wise use of localnatural resources by providing technical services and education. We areseeking an exceptional GIS Cartographer to assist our towns, othernon-profits and individuals with their mapping needs. This positionwill be located in Torrington, Connecticut with a July, 2009 startdate. The ideal candidate will be interested in promoting a moresustainable use of natural resources and be looking for a multi-facetedposition in a flexible work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Assist our towns in creating Natural Resource Inventories and other maps to guide planning.
- Work with town personnel and commissions creating a variety of datalayers such as zoning, open space, land use, slope, trails, publicutilities or historic buildings.
- Create and update parcel layers
- Assist area Land Trusts, other non-profits and individual land owners with mapping projects.
Qualifications:
- BS/MS Degree – preferably in Geography/GIS or other Natural Resource related field.
- 2- 3 years experience solving problems using GIS software.
- Strong knowledge and experience with ESRI and Trimble software.
- Ability to creatively and effectively communicate ideas and data.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Highly motivated self-directed individual who will be an effective member of our team.
- Flexibility to provide occasional support for other NCD fundraising and education programs.
Other Valuable Experience includes familiarity with:
- Municipal government structure and operation in CT
- Land preservation techniques
- Soil Science, E&S, Stormwater Management
- Low Impact Development
- Municipal planning
- Clean energy / Green technologies
- IT Expertise, Web development and maintenance
