Position Description:

Duke University’s Climate Change Policy Partnership (CCPP) is seeking aProgrammer/Analyst with experience in:
1) GIS
2) Operations Researchwith a focus in GAMS programming and
3) GIS-GAMS integration to joinour interdisciplinary team.

The Programmer will assist a research team with:

1) the design of a CO2pipeline network for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system usingGIS and GAMS, as well as other projects within the CCPP that requireGIS analysis and/or GAMS
2) converting a transportation policy modelwritten in GAMS for the European Union to be used in the United States and
3) other projects.

The candidate will be expected to:
1) collect geospatial data
2) construct cost surfaces
3) help develop a GAMS model that will simultaneously optimize therouting, sizing, and operation of CO2 pipelines in a networkconfiguration — taking into account the volume and flow of CO2captured from power plants — to minimize the cost of transporting andstoring CO2 in geologic storage sites
4) develop maps for displaying results
5) assist in GAMS programming for a transportation model
6) provide GIS analysis and support as needed for other projects in the CCPP.

Requirements:
The candidate must have a master’s degree in Geography, OperationsResearch, Economics, Engineering or similar discipline and haveexperience or training in ArcGIS, GAMS programming, and GIS-GAMSintegration. Other comparable programming experience may be substitutedfor GAMS experience. This position is funded through 2010 and may beextended contingent on additional funding and candidate performance.
CCPP research informs legislators and stakeholders on systems criticalto achieving a low carbon economy. The CCPP is a collaborative effortof the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, theCenter on Global Change, and the Nicholas School of the Environment.
