Work Environment

The Canada Centre for Cadastral Management is home to the Surveyor General of Canada Lands, the corporate surveyor for Canada Lands, and as such is a centre of expertise for legal boundaries and property systems. The Centre’s mandate may be split along two primary business lines – the regulation of cadastral surveys on Canada Lands ( Indian Reserves, National Parks, the offshore and the Territories) and the management of large cadastral survey programs. These services are provided primarily to the Government of Canada and the Territorial governments.

Products derived from these services such as official survey documents, maps and digital cadastral data are available to citizens. These products may be useful for deriving value added products such integrated maps and GIS applications.

Challenge

Working in a unit of 11 professional and technical staff, the main challenge is the timely and accurate updating of digital cadastral databases with information supplied to the Surveyor General by Surveyors in the private sector. The supplied information must first be verified and checked for accuracy and compliance with specified standards. It must then be integrated with existing data using specific GIS tools and in accordance with specified standards and tolerences.
