Work Environment
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) plays a pivotal role in helping shape the enormous economic, social and environmental contributions of Canada’s natural resources sector – our forests, energy, minerals and metals, and landmass, as well as the related industries.
The Earth Sciences Sector of NRCan provides a national focus for the acquisition, interpretation, maintenance and distribution of maps, information, technology, standards and expertise concerning the Canadian landmass and offshore in the fields of geoscience, geodesy, mapping, surveying, and remote sensing.
NRCan and the Earth Sciences Sector are committed to providing work experience to students and helping them to develop skills and abilities for future employment. We encourage students to consider us for on-going or post-graduate employment in two areas: Geo-Mapping and Cadastral Land Surveys. Some positions are available starting May 2009. All applications will be answered, successful or otherwise.
Challenge
We are looking for people interested in geography, maps and land property management specialties. Job opportunities at NRCan would allow you to play a role in addressing some important issues in our society, such as protecting our environment and critical resources like groundwater, to understand how these resources and their use are changing, and to provide information Canadians need to make wise decisions regarding the development of natural resources.
The geomatics and geoscience we use have advanced remarkably to ensure we are able to support these goals. They include access to remote sensing data from space or specially equipped aircraft, as well as digital mapping and Geographic Information Systems to help integrate and analyze data from many sources. Finally, the Internet helps provide broad access to geographic data, maps and applications.
There are two types of opportunities for you to consider:
A) Geo-mapping positions
As part of a project team, adapt or apply Data Management and Geographic Information Systems tools to aggregate remote sensing data and data from a variety of sources, including natural resources, mapping, environmental or social information;
Participate in the design, analysis and management of geospatial databases;
Contribute to the development of WEB related applications;
Conduct related data gathering using established sources or procedures in the field or in the office and laboratory;
Preparing reports for internal use and/or contributing to documentation destined for publication;
B) Land Survey positions
As part of a project team, support, organize and conduct spatial data acquisition, analysis/processing and representation activities for the development of Cadastral data;
Participate in the integration and adjustment of spatial data in accordance to established procedures;
Contribute to the development of Geomatics products;
As part of a field team, assist in the collection of land survey data;
Provide technical input and support in the development and improvement of methods, processes, systems, techniques, instrumentation and electronic applications.
