Salary: This unionized position (CUPE Local 358) is a temporary, full time position, and is compensated at $18.84 per hour (2009 rates). In lieu of benefits and statutory holidays, 8% will be paid. In lieu of vacation, 6% will be paid. This position is available for a period of 16 weeks commencing in May and continuing through August. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. May/June hours of work are 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 pm., and July/August hours of work are 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Description:
The Corporate Services Department of the Cowichan Valley Regional District is seeking a GIS Student.  Working under the supervision of the GIS Supervisor and as an integral part of the GIS Team, the GIS Student is responsible for a variety of routine technical assignments.  The GIS Student assists the GIS Team with general tasks, assists with special projects, and receives relevant GIS experience.  Duties may include recording plan data, plotting map orders, performing general filing, responding to map related inquiries, and providing map sales.

Qualifications:
Preferred candidates will be in the 3rd or 4th year of a Geography degree program, with at least one completed course in GIS, or enrolled in a GIS program at a post secondary institution. Possess a First Aid Level 1 Certificate. Possess hands-on experience with ESRI ArcGIS Desktop, with some development/customization experience preferred. The successful candidate will possess: proficient computer operations with a variety of software packages including Microsoft Office 2007; the ability to comprehend and follow detailed instructions, to produce accurate work in a timely manner; the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; and interpersonal skills enabling them to respond courteously, tactfully and diplomatically to other employees, the general public, and Regional Board Directors. Candidates must be a student attending Community College or University and returning in the fall to qualify for this position.
