Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC; http://nsac.ca) is a small research-intensive university located in the centre of beautiful Nova Scotia at Truro-Bible Hill. NSAC seeks candidates to fill the position of GIS Specialist, Precision Agriculture Research Program.

Duties:

The GIS Specialist will be open to an evolving work environment, as part of a team involved in research projects with a focus on development/testing of DGPS/GIS driven precision agriculture systems; a combination of field and laboratory research using GIS/DGPS, sensors, data entry, management, data analysis, GIS mapping, interpretation and summarization of results; extensive liaison with various research scientists, industry representatives, extension activities, producers and technology transfer activities via participation in extension bulletins, scientific articles, and the posting of articles on the web-site developing precision agriculture systems in wild blueberry production systems. In particular, the incumbent will help support research toward the development of technologies for variable rate application of agrochemicals in wild blueberry fields. Duties will also include performing tests using a variety of field and laboratory equipment; calibrating and maintaining instrumentation; preparing and processing field samples for analysis; and participating in the collection of field samples throughout eastern Canada. The successful applicant will interact with researchers and stakeholders with respect to the related projects.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and one year experience in a related discipline. Must have an advanced diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The incumbent will have experience with the operation of GPS/GIS, controllers and sensors or other aspects of precision agriculture. Applicants must be skilled in computer programming (e.g. Visual basic, C++, Pascal), electronics and instrumentation. The successful candidate must be able to work and problem solve as part of a growing team, as well as independently. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are requirements for this position. A valid Nova Scotia drivers licence is also essential.

Salary: $21.28 – $26.09 per hour
