The Summer Conservation Planning Intern position is designed to support NCC’s conservation planning effort. Conservation planning is critical to guide the NCC’s future conservation actions in priority Natural Areas. The Summer Conservation Planning Intern will spend approximately 90% of their time in the office conducting GIS analysis of conservation targets, threats and actions, and report writing. There will also be the opportunity to spend approximately 10% of the time in the field ground-truthing conservation data.
Specific Responsibilities
- Collect and analyze conservation data (conservation targets and threats) and interpret in a ArcGIS 9.2 platform;
- Report preparation;
- Ground-truthing of conservation data
- Liaison with partners.
- Property Management Plan development support
Skills and Abilities
This posting is targeted to students possessing the following skills:
- Ability to work well in a team setting,
- Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS 9.2, conservation planning methodology, and project management
- Knowledge of conservation biology;
- Highly motivated, analytical, detail-oriented, creative, and proactive thinker;
- Self motivated, superior time management and organizational skills, ability to work to meet deadlines;
- Excellent communication skills and excellent technical writing skills;
- Valid class 5 Driver’s License.
Terms of Employment
- This is a full-time 16-week (May 11th -August 28th, 2009) position. Salary is $18.00/hour ($675/week).
- Position location flexible but may require infrequent travel throughout southern Alberta, and overnights away from home office. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
