CPAWS Calgary/Banff in Calgary, Alberta is currently seeking to fill the following position:
Senior Conservation Planner
Scope of Work
Reporting to the Executive Director, the position is responsible for:
- Developing and implementing conservation policy and land use policy in southern Alberta as a cohesive and integrated effort with the following stakeholders and partners: environmental organizations, municipal governments, special interest groups, provincial government departments, and corporate stakeholders
- These conservation planning efforts have four main foci:
- The protection of the Castle Wilderness
- Influencing the Southern Alberta land use framework, in particular the Southern Alberta Regional Plan
- Protection of wildlife habitat and movement in the Crowsnest Pass and the East Slopes of the Southern Rockies
- Planning and implementation of stewardship efforts for the larger region of Southern Alberta.
- advising the Executive Director on policy and operational matters
- ensuring that laws, regulations and policies are followed
- developing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives from other organizations, professional associations, the media and other stakeholders in the Southern Alberta Region
- implementing operational plans and management of budgets
- providing the leadership required for CPAWS Southern Alberta to fulfill its goals and objectives.
Competencies of the Position
Knowledge
- Knowledge of provincial legislation affecting land-use
- Knowledge of land use management and conservation, policies and processes
- Knowledge of budgeting, financial management
- Knowledge of policy and program development, management implementation and evaluation.

Employment requirements
A bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning, geography, architecture, engineering or a related discipline is required. A master’s degree in one of these disciplines is desirable.
Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners or a provincial planning institute is desirable.
Experience in land use planning, management and conservation, policies and processes. Experience in conservation policy and program development, and knowledge of provincial legislation affecting land-use is required.
Progressive experience in management positions in planning is desirable.
