The TRTFN Traditional Territory covers an area of 14,900 square miles (38,614 km2) in the north-western corner of British Columbia. This territory includes the entire Taku River drainage and a significant portion of the upper Yukon River drainage in BC. Both of these are trans-boundary drainages. The very lower reaches of the Taku River are situated in Southeast Alaska, while the Yukon drainage flows into the Yukon Territory and eventually Alaska. The Taku River is the fifth largest river, in both area and discharge, to empty into the Pacific Ocean from a primarily British Columbia source area. The Taku Basin within Canada is very diverse and encompasses 5 Ecosections with 7 Biogeoclimatic Zones in two major climate types. The Taku River drainage remains one of the largest (virtually) road-less wilderness areas in the Canadian Pacific, and indeed the world.

Atlin is a remote, friendly community on the shores of beautiful Atlin Lake, the largest natural lake in British Columbia. The community is nestled in the spectacular wilderness of the Coast Mountains within the Taku River Tlingit First Nation's traditional territory. The town itself was founded during the Klondike gold rush of 1898 and still retains some of the gold rush ambiance. The surrounding land is stunningly beautiful and local people claim that Atlin is 'the best kept secret in BC'. Atlin has a population of 300-500 full-time residents and is a 2-3 hour drive from Whitehorse , Yukon. There are a few stores that can provide fuel, food and hardware. Atlin has a small elementary school and a branch of the Northern Lights College. For more information about Atlin visit: http://www.atlin.net/.
