Geographic Information Systems Technician, District of Oak Bay


(2008 Rate: $28.13 – 29.83 per hour)

Applications are invited to fill the full time (35 hour week) position of Geographic Information Systems Technician for the District of Oak Bay.

The GIS Technician is responsible for the creation and maintenance of a variety of GIS databases under the general direction of the Director of Engineering Services. Spatial and non-spatial data are inputted from existing records and from field changes such as new infrastructure installation and subdivisions.

The GIS database being a corporate resource, the GIS Technician will also produce maps and other land-based data products on a custom basis for a variety of municipal departments, and in general will assist other departments and the public at large in accessing information on the GIS database.

The position also involves the creation of user interfaces for the collection of new data. The position requires a thorough knowledge of the use, setup and administration of all of the ESRI ArcGIS software package, along with a broad general knowledge of information technology systems and database and programming software. The GIS Technician must have the organizational skills and focus to be able to ensure systematic ongoing maintenance and updating of key databases while at the same time meeting deadlines for custom services and one-off projects. These latter add an interesting challenge to the position and can be very rewarding.

The minimum educational requirement is a college diploma in geography, cartography, surveying or other discipline providing exposure to GIS principles and methods, supplemented by experience in the GIS field.

This is a union position in the District of Oak Bay bargaining unit represented by CUPE Local 374; it includes an excellent benefit package.
