DEPARTMENT OR PROGRAM SPECIFIC

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The GIS Specialist  manages and maintains conservation databases and provides technical support in GIS or other relational database technologies to Conservancy staff.  Includes compiling, assembling and maintaining land protection, biodiversity and management information from various sources. This may also include one or more of the following functions:
• Apply TNC standards measures for effective conservation
• Participates in conservation planning at various levels
• Develops methods for mapping and classifying ecosystems and data management; includes developing and maintaining all documentation for data and data management
• Performs data analysis; designs and produces advanced complex queries and professional reports
• Processes spatial and other relational data sets derived from cartographic and tabular source material
• Provides hardware and GIS software support, and acquisition support
• Develops and delivers training to staff individually and in groups
• Builds, maintains, and populates data and records databases and manual files
• Produces maps and other graphic products and reports
• Develops and maintains GIS library and/or geodatabases based on Program and Regional Standards
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• MS or BS degree and certification in one or more of the following fields: geography, ecology, natural sciences, information management and 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of computer based GIS and database management systems such as ArcGIS, ARC/INFO, ArcView, SQL, Access, dBASE.
• Experience managing, maintaining and populating databases and manual files.
• Experience in managing multiple projects.
• Experience in analyzing data and producing data reports.
• Experience in developing and/or delivering training.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• MS or BS degree and certification in geography, ecology, natural sciences, information management and 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Demonstrated experience in the following areas: interpretation of image analysis, complex spatial analysis, data modeling and landscape scenario analysis
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and region(s)
• Demonstrated experience interpreting and communicating results to conservation practitioners
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with other parties to obtain different data sources
• Ability to make practical sense out of processed data and apply to real world applications
• Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
• Demonstrated experience operating ESRI GIS software, managing relational databases and creating maps
• Demonstrated database and computer based management experience including managing, maintaining and populating databases, manual files, and geodatabase files.
• Managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources
• Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects and implementing program goals
• Experience training individuals and groups
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Access, Excel, Web browsers)
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Spanish

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• May help develop and manage work plans and large project budgets
• May negotiate and contract with vendors
• Ensures integrity of both data collection and management relating to conservation projects and project statistics

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information
• Ability to simplify and explain complex scientific and/or conservation data to general audiences
• Communicates strategic project goals and objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain. 
• Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
