GIS Technician – Ecotrust


Reports to: Senior GIS Analyst
Location: Portland, OR

Role and Functional Responsibilities:

The GIS Technician plays an active role within the Ecotrust Knowledge Systems group by providing general GIS related technical and administrative support. The GIS Technician’s primary responsibilities are to create, maintain and update GIS data sets and related information, research and examine availability and validity of existing data, process and analyze data, creation of geoprocessing scripts, and production of mapping products, reports, and presentations. Other key responsibilities include updating and quality control/quality assurance; GIS data entry, attributing, and metadata creation. The vast majority of the GIS Technician’s time is focused on providing the above technical and administrative assistance to the GIS Manager and Senior GIS staff. S/he works with the GIS Manager, and other Senior staff to allocate resources to projects and programs based on priority needs.

The GIS Technician will also perform other tasks for Ecotrust managers as requested.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong trouble-shooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to meet the needs of staff and clients.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize ESRI’s ArcInfo software products to analyze scientific based information.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, Planning, Forestry, or closely related field.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a GIS-related position.
  • Basic understanding of mapping principles.

Preferred Skills:

  • General understanding of and/or experience with one or more of the following: Python, PHP, Perl, VBScript, JavaScript, AML, etc.
  • Ability to develop automated GIS procedures using Python, AML, etc.
  • Familiarity with GPS technology, data collection, and integration with GIS software.
  • Fundamental understanding of statistics.
  • Understanding of forest inventory or forest ecology data and an ability to interpret such data.
  • Knowledge of forest stand growth and yield modeling and/or ecological models and ability to interpret results.
  • Familiarity in graphing and visualizing numeric data.
  • Scientific background in and an understanding of scientific procedures especially pertaining to fisheries, forestry and other natural resource based sciences procedures.
