GIS Technician (2 Temporary Positions -18 Months)

Halifax Regional Municipality is currently recruiting two GIS Technicians (2 temporary) to assist with GIS activities that support the Corporate Asset Management Project./ Program. The position is responsible for the development and maintenance of corporate digital databases associated with the Asset Management Project/ Program (i.e. HRM owned land, buildings, infrastructure, fleet), documentation of procedures regarding database maintenance, preparing digital and hard copy maps, and providing technical support in the area of GIS applications that support asset management. These positions will be located at 21 Mount Hope Avenue.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and maintain corporate digital databases associated with the Asset Management project/ program
- Ensure data meets corporate standards as well as client needs and that appropriate metadata is captured against the corporate databases.
- Research, retrieve and distribute hard copy and digital information
- Prepare hard copy and digital outputs, sketches, charts and tables for reports, internal/external applications and conferences.
- Provide technical assistance to internal project and program in the use of system applications and data applications
- Assists in the writing of documentation for frequently used technical procedures, data standards and data management practices
- Assist in developing geographic information and data management policies
- Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- GIS, Cartographic or Planning Technicians Diploma (2 year) or equivalent from a recognized institution (equivalent combination of education & work experience may be considered);
- Minimum 2 years experience working in a civil, planning, municipal or engineering environment
- Minimum 1 year experience working with ArcGIS, ArcSDE, ArcIMS
Job Specific Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of GIS concepts and trends
- Extensive working knowledge of GIS (ESRI products) and GIS techniques
- Thorough knowledge of other geomatics technologies (i.e. GPS)
- Thorough knowledge of database management concepts
- General knowledge of computer aided drafting (AutoCAD)
- Knowledge of the services provided by HRM
- Good geographic knowledge of HRM
Technical Skills:
- Extensive interpretation skills with respect to municipal information (i.e. roads and water networks, property information, building information, parks and open spaces, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to and improve upon GIS data standards
- Good database management skills
- Strong data analysis and maintenance skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Demonstrated project planning and management skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in various computer applications (i.e. Word Perfect, Word, Lotus, Excel, MS Access, GroupWise, electronic permitting systems such as Hansen. Familiarity with other GIS, CAD and database softwares will be considered an asset.

Hours of Work: 8:30-4:30 Monday- Friday
Salary: $25.87 per hour (as per NSUPE Level 7)
