GIS/RS Analyst – Haida Mapping


The Haida Mapping Program of the Haida Tribal Society is seeking a GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst to fill a one- to two-year contract position in their office in Masset on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). This position will involve GIS/RS data acquisition and processing, air photo interpretation and analyses, and cartography for forestry, heritage, fisheries, and other applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with Haida Mapping staff to develop and generate spatial information and analysis products at various spatial scales;
  • Interpret and analyze historical and contemporary air photos, with an emphasis on forest cover data extraction using 3D digital stereo equipment and software;
  • Conduct spatial assessments for forestry and land use planning, including conservation planning and stewardship;
  • Coordinate development and maintenance of spatial information products, including quality assurance and security of GIS and related database and spreadsheet files; and
  • Work with other GIS Technicians and Analysts on collaborative initiatives.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS/RS applications for resource management;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of GIS/RS systems and related hardware and software, including experience with ESRI ArcGIS software and remote sensing software;
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment and deliver projects under tight time constraints;
  • Ability to produce and interpret complex spatial data using creative cartography;
  • Understanding of First Nations issues and traditional knowledge, and the importance of these to resource planning and management;
  • Understanding of the application of spatial information in forestry, ecosystem-based management, and land use planning; and
  • Experience with data acquisition and processing from GPS equipment will be an asset.
