Marine GIS Analyst – Haida Mapping


Haida Mapping and Haida Fisheries Program of the Haida Tribal Society are seeking a Marine GIS Analyst to fill a one- to two-year contract position in their offices in Masset on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). This position will involve GIS data acquisition, processing, analyses, and cartography primarily for marine use planning, as well as for fisheries and other applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Haida Oceans Technical Team to develop and generate spatial information and analysis products at various spatial scales;
  • Conduct spatial assessments for marine use planning, including conservation planning and stewardship;
  • Coordinate development and maintenance of spatial information products, including quality assurance and security of GIS and related database and spreadsheet files; and
  • Work with the Haida Oceans Technical Team and GIS Coordinators for the North and Central Coast First Nations communities to coordinate collaborative initiatives.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma specializing in GIS applications for resource management;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of GIS systems and related hardware and software, including experience in the use of ESRI ArcGIS software;
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment and deliver projects under tight time constraints;
  • Ability to produce and interpret complex spatial information products;
  • Understanding of First Nations issues and traditional knowledge, and the importance of these to resource planning and management;
  • Understanding of the application of spatial information in marine use planning and ecosystem-based management; and
  • Experience with creative cartography for a broad range of audiences, data input from GPS and knowledge of Marxan analyses an asset.
