Located north of Victoria, on the beautiful Saanich Peninsula, the District of North Saanich with a population of 11,000 residents, has a unique blend of traditional, rural and upscale residential properties. The District invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of GIS Technician.
Under the supervision of the IT/GIS Manager, the GIS Technician will be responsible for a wide range of technical duties related to the development and maintenance of GIS data, applications, procedures and standards. This exciting opportunity will provide the successful applicant the opportunity to develop, maintain and distribute a corporate GIS solution including the production of maps, queries and reports. The GIS Technician will also provide GIS training to staff members within the organization and assist with the coordination of technical support from vendors and external consultants as required.
The successful applicant will have considerable latitude for independent judgment, must be self motivated, comfortable with a wide variety of duties and have the ability to maintain the District’s current accuracy standards related to mapping and GIS.
The successful applicant must also possess the following qualifications:
- Considerable knowledge of geographic information concepts, systems and applications.
- Considerable knowledge related to the maintenance of cadastral data as well as an understanding of legal land survey drawings and coordinate geometry.
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server relational databases.
- Proven skills in the use of Autodesk software plus a sound knowledge of mapping principles and techniques.
- Experience with GIS software applications provided by ESRI and Safe Software (FME) as well as a clear understanding of web mapping capabilities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with other staff members, external contacts and the public.
- A technical diploma in GIS, geography, or related field and three years experience, or an acceptable combination of experience, education and training. GISP designation would be considered an asset.
This position is subject to all provisions as contained in the current Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 374 Collective Agreement. The (2008) hourly rates for this position are $29.17 (Step 1), $30.07 (Step 2), $30.98 (Step 3), plus benefits.
