Location: Olympia, WA
Description: Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) is committed to providing recreation for all, including the maintenance and development of recreational and interpretive trails. The need for an extensive trail and resource inventory has been identified within the agency to provide critical information for resource stewardship and development of these public lands. Using Trimble GPS, the location of trails, facilities, and various natural and cultural features will be recorded on-site. The data will be entered into an agency-wide database to inform permitted trail uses and identify areas with environmental constraints. Recruits will benefit from advanced training in resource grade GPS technology and extensive understanding and development of WSPRC recreational trail standards. They will also gain priceless experiences exploring the premier destinations of uncommon quality that are Washington State Parks.
General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
1. Apply basic and advanced concepts of mapping grade GPS.
2. Learn and apply Trimble GPS software functionality.
3. Learn the standards and considerations for trail construction and resource maintenance.
4. Travel to various properties in the State Parks system.
5. Work cooperatively with park staff and project lead to gather all necessary data.
6. Hike, and occasionally bike or drive park trails and roads.
7. Collect photo documentation of trail features.
8. Work with and edit collected data, both within a GPS unit and on a laptop.
9. Provide completed data to park staff and project lead.
10. Attend and complete all NWSA/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
11. Complete and submit all necessary NWSA/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
12. Wear an NWSA uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.
Position Requirements:
1. Ability to hike long distances and for long periods of time on sometimes primitive trails.
2. Attention to detail with an affinity for technology.
3. Ability to read maps.
4. Strong interest in outdoor recreation.
5. Self directed and motivated.
6. Good communication skills.
7. Must have a valid driver’s license and take Defensive Driving Training to qualify for state vehicle.
8. Works well with people.
9. 21 years of age or older, at beginning of service term.
10. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
11. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
12. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
13. Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check provided through NWSA and/or Project Sponsor Agency.
14. Regular and reliable attendance.
15. Have not previously served two terms in an AmeriCorps*State or National program. Members may serve up to three terms in a National Service Program, but only two terms may be within an AmeriCorps*State or National program. Members are only eligible for an education award for their first two terms of service, regardless of the type of term (full or part-time) and regardless of the successful completion of that term.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Prior experience with Trimble GPS products.
2. Has familiarity with basic GIS concepts.
