Green Power Labs Inc. is currently accepting applications for the position of GIS Programmer to provide programming solutions in the areas of Geographic Information System (GIS), internet technology and database applications. The incumbent will assist with the development of Green Power Labs’ SolarGIS – a unique toolset for high resolution solar resource mapping, and related applications.

Initial position term is 6 months with a possibility of extending for additional 12 months.

The Position:

GIS Programmer will be responsible for:

  • Developing web-based GIS applications, maintaining codes, monitoring and managing service levels, and analyzing and resolving security issues
  • Developing web-based product/service delivery models 
  • Monitoring web-based service and liaising with providers of outsourced resources
  • Developing and maintaining documentation relating to SolarGIS software, database systems and applications 
  • Providing technical assistance in the planning and development of new projects and systems, conducting research of new technologies and implementation strategies, recommending and implementing improvements; researching and planning for new – or updates to – operating systems, software and hardware 
  • Providing technical support on the web site and on internal database systems. Conducting training as required for new or updated web site features or internal database systems 
  • Assisting and backing-up Digital Cartographers and completing other projects and duties as assigned

The Person:

The successful candidate will have successfully completed a Computer Science Degree or an equivalent technical diploma plus have three years related experience; or have an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will also have the following skill set and applicants are asked to include examples of how they have applied these skills in their application:

  • Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS 9.2 and ArcServer applications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer programming in ArcGIS environment
  • Experience in managing online data bases (e.g. SQL)
  • Strong communication skills including oral and written communication skills (with an emphasis on technical writing) 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Visual Studio.Net, VB, C#
  • Demonstrated proficiency in general web development, VBA, XHTML/HTML, XML
  • Experience in Web programming (JavaScript, Python, VB Script)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, Telnet and SSH protocols
  • Demonstrated proficiency in database management  and familiarity with database architecture concepts
  • Proven object oriented programming skills 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Windows operating system 
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Experience in Unix operating systems will be considered an asset 
  • Experience in PHP, PERL, and Adobe Flash will be considered an asset
