Conservation Planner


Company description: Round River Conservation Studies is looking for an enthusiastic and capable planner to join our team of conservation professionals.

Founded in 1991, Round River is dedicated to conservation strategies that preserve and restore wild places. These efforts are anchored in the principles of conservation biology, supported by field research and regional and community planning.

Employing the principles of conservation biology, Round River provides their partner communities, organizations and governments with a well-founded scientific basis for their long-term conservation efforts.

Round River is currently working in the United States, Canada, Ecuador, Peru, Namibia and developing new projects in Botswana and Australia.

Job description: The conservation planner will undertake a diversity of tasks to support Round River projects. These will include spatial data compilation, assessment and analyses using GIS tools, land use planning, and the design and development of community-based planning initiatives and plan documents; these and other potential tasks will be in collaboration with other Round River technical and planning staff and partners. This is a mid-level position based with opportunities for project work in the US and internationally

Reporting Relationships
Reports to Executive Director. To support various projects, the land planner will also receive direction from Round River’s Lead Conservation Scientist, GIS Analyst, and Project Directors as needed.

Scope of Responsibilities:

GIS Support (50%)

  • Data compilation and management
  • Spatial analyses
  • Report and map production

Regional and Community-Based Planning Support (30%)

  • Support the development and implementation of planning frameworks and associated analytical approaches and strategies
  • Design and deliver processes to effectively engage and collaborate with governments, stakeholders and communities in conservation planning initiatives
  • Contribute to capacity building for local partners through training and mentoring
  • Prepare planning documents for regional conservation initiatives suitable for both technical and public audiences

General Project Support and Development (15%)

  • Assist Regional Program Directors and Project Directors with the preparation of planning and reporting documents for specific projects, including project proposals, interim and final reports
  • Assist in the reconnaissance and scoping phase of Round River projects
  • Assist in preparing background documentation on conservation planning contexts for use in funding proposals and project overviews

Administration and Professional Development (5%)

  • Participate in Round River staff meetings
  • Identify priorities for professional development and participate in training, apprenticeships or other learning opportunities as appropriate

Qualifications:

  • Relevant graduate degree in landscape ecology, conservation biology, resource management or related field, with an emphasis on conservation or community-based planning (minimum MS degree, 5 years or more relevant experience may substitute for advanced degree)
  • Expertise, familiarity and relevant experience using ArcGIS for a diversity of landscape spatial analyses
  • Spatial and non-spatial data management and assessment skills and experience
  • 2-5 years conservation or regional planning experience, with some international project experience preferred
  • Knowledge of various approaches to land use planning
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in teams, often in remote field settings
  • An ability to work constructively and confidently in complex, inter-cultural settings
  • An ability to travel and work for extended periods in all Round River project sites, up to six months, away from home base.
