The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a private, non-profit organization that prides itself on its entrepreneurial, science-based, non-confrontational approach to achieving conservation success. Since its establishment in 1962, NCC and its supporters have protected close to two million acres of natural habitat across Canada. NCC has seven regional offices across the country with a national office in Toronto.
Purpose and General Description
The successful candidate will assist in the development and implementation of the stewardship and land management program for significant natural lands protected by The Nature Conservancy of Canada in British Columbia.
This is a full-time position based in the BC Region main office in Victoria.
Reporting Relationships
The Stewardship & Land Management Assistant is supervised by the Director of Land stewardship and works in close collaboration with the Securement department, as well as other NCC staff, partner conservation organizations, and local stewards and volunteers to ensure the successful implementation of stewardship and land management arrangements
Duties and Responsibilities – Essential Functions
1. Stewardship & Land Management (60%): Assist with reports, projections, budgeting, and group products for/with regional and National staff. Assist with Board liaison regarding the Region’s stewardship work – e.g. board reports and/or presentations. Work closely with the Coordinator of Conservation Projects by taking primary responsibility for the management of all tenures, licenses, and taxes associated with NCC BC’s interests in land, with the exception of non-program office building issues. Take primary responsibility for stewardship record keeping and information management.
2. Development and Communications (20%): Assist with stewardship funding proposal and reports in cooperation with BC region Finance and Development departments. Take the lead on responding to internal and external public enquiries coming into the Victoria office about the region’s and NCC’s stewardship program and activities. In cooperation with the Communications department, assist with regional communications about stewardship work – e.g. media, volunteer events, other events, internal and external publications.
3. Volunteers (10%): Provide liaison and assistance to field program volunteer activities and events.
4. Special Projects (10%): Completes other duties and special projects as assigned by the
Director of Land Stewardship or Regional Vice President.
Skills and Abilities:
• A minimum of 2 years experience with ecological restoration and conservation biology
• Comfortable working in a team setting.
• Demonstrated ability to work with landowners, partner organizations, the agricultural community, industry representatives, and the general public.
• Demonstrated field skills in conducting natural heritage inventories, and ecological health assessments (e.g. range, riparian).
• Familiar with provincially and federally designated species.
• Experience drafting and reviewing management plans.
• Experience with volunteer recruitment, management and leadership.
• Creative, pro-active, analytical, and detail-oriented thinker.
• Self-motivated with superior time management skills.
• Excellent communication skills – comfortable with public speaking, skilled at writing reports.
• Proficient with MS word and Excel; knowledge of Access database software would be an asset.
• GPS and GIS experience and knowledge would be an asset.
• Demonstrated interest in environmental issues, preferably in natural history and land conservation.
