GIS Supervisor – City of Burnaby


Description: This is supervisory and technical work in coordinating the operations of the G.I.S. and Drafting section of the Engineering Department. The incumbent supervises a moderate sized group of technical staff and performs duties such as coordinating the development, implementation and maintenance of the corporate Geographic Information System; working with end users to define business requirements and overseeing the development and procurement of G.I.S. solutions and maintaining aliaison with internal and external contacts on matters related to the work. Additional duties include developing and maintaining new and/or improved G.I.S and Drafting techniques, standards and practices and ensuring that system changes are adequately documented; supervising the section records management system to ensure efficient accessibility and the ability to retrieve hard copies and computer records of maps, drawings and related data; determining and implementing overall work priorities and scheduling mapping projects as well as working on complex or special projects as required. This position requires considerable independence of judgement and action with complex problems or policy matters being discussed with a supervisor. The incumbent also performs related work as required.

Requirements: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related subject area, supplemented by completion of a G.I.S. post diploma program at an Institute of Technology and considerable related experience is needed or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Additionally, the incumbent requires a thorough knowledge of spatial information system standards and techniques; thorough knowledge of problem definition and solution techniques applicable tothe work and considerable knowledge of software programs and hardware components of a G.I.S. system including excellent knowledge of the ESRI software suite of G.I.S. tools. This position also needs the ability to coordinate the ongoing management of a corporate G.I.S. and to adjust work priorities accordingly; skill and knowledge in analysis of G.I.S.and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts is essential.
