Description
The Oil and Gas Commission has statutory authority for most aspects of the regulation of the “upstream” segment of BC’s oil and gas sector. The Regulatory Affairs and Consultation Division is seeking a GIS Analyst to join the Planning and Analysis Department. This team of Resource Specialists, Planners and GIS Specialists is responsible for the development of strategies related to surface and subsurface resource management. This position will focus predominantly on subsurface GIS.
Responsibilities
The GIS Analyst designs, develops, manages and conducts advanced spatial data analysis, and produces and modifies digital data products related to oil and gas development (surface and subsurface). This position is required to maintain, analyze, interpret and present complex and detailed spatial databases in conjunction with other government agencies. This position effectively integrates and analyzes resource/environmental information from a wide variety of sources to provide staff with the information needed for their decision-making processes. Work within the Planning and Analysis team, recommend and develop analysis tools to support broader frameworks for application reviews.
Qualifications
Bachelor degree in Earth Sciences and two year of related experience or technical diploma and four years of related experience. This position requires at least one year of current experience (gained within the last three years) in GIS software (Arc Info and ArcMap).
This position maintains and recommends continual improvement strategies for all standards policies to GIS analysis and mapping. This requires comprehensive knowledge of GIS software and hardware, the ability to develop specialty one-of-a-kind products for industry and OGC clients, the ability to interpret sophisticated scientific and technical information to non-technical staff; and the skills to merge geological information from historic manual records, maps and modern GIS data.
There may be different combinations of education and experience that would meet this requirement. Related experiences would include working in a resource management related field with exposure to a wide variety of land and environmental data and information, capturing, converting, creating, editing and maintaining digital information in a GIS environment. Preference given to those with advanced experience in managing large spatial and attribute databases and producing cartographic quality maps, with demonstrated technical expertise in relational database systems and full working knowledge of computers and common government software.
