GIS Technician – 1 year contract
Conservation Halton is a community based environmental agency that works in partnership with watershed municipalities and the Province of Ontario to protect the natural environment. We also manage a number of parks for education and recreation including Glen Eden Ski & Snowboard Centre, Crawford Lake, Mountsberg Wildlife Centre, Rattlesnake Point, Mount Nemo, and Hilton Falls.

General Description
The GIS Technician, reports to the GIS Specialist, and is responsible for assisting in maintenance of the GIS and with delivery of services for a diverse range of programs and services undertaken by Conservation Halton. The technician will work as part of a GIS team and also be required to work independently on project specific tasks. Specific duties will involve data creation, analysis, methodology documentation, report writing, and assisting with the provision of GIS support to CH staff.
The successful candidate will gain experience in “real world” GIS data handling, undertake analysis and generate summary analysis/mapping using environmental datasets related to natural hazard delineation, regulation enforcement, watershed management, watershed planning, watershed engineering, restoration ecology and forestry management.
Responsibilities
§ Assisting in GIS data collection, entry and analysis related to the support of a wide range of Conservation Authority programs (e.g., identification of natural hazards and natural heritage systems, assisting with land acquisition strategies, property enquiries),
§ Conversion of hardcopy reports/drawings/mapping to feature classes within geodatabases and/or Access based databases,
§ Reviewing and incorporating new GIS data into the corporate GIS,
§ Assisting non-GIS staff with the conversion of digital datasets to GIS formats (e.g., AutoCAD to ESRI shape files or feature classes),
§ Assisting with the provision of GIS assistance and technical support to staff (i.e., Arc View 3.2 and ArcGIS 9.2),
§ Preparing presentation materials for, and participating in, project related workshops, open houses and training sessions,
§ Generation of metadata and documentation of project analysis, results and methods,
§ Maintenance of GIS content on the corporate website,
§ Ensuring GIS equipment and data are used in accordance with guidelines developed by the GIS Specialist,
§ Performing his/her duties and ensure assigned employees and volunteers work in accordance with the Authority’s Safety Policy and Procedures and in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
§ Performing such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Manager, Watershed Planning Services or GIS Specialist.
Qualifications
§ An undergraduate degree in Geography, Geology, Biology, Ecology, Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Computer Science or the equivalent
§ A post graduate diploma/certificate in GIS or Spatial Analysis, or a GIS Minor/Specialization as part of an undergraduate degree,
§ Working knowledge of ESRI’s 9.2 Desktop GIS products (e.g., ArcMap, ArcCatalog),
§ Experience with personal and file geodatabases,
§ Knowledge of Arc View 3.x and the management/use of shape files,
§ Working knowledge of GIS methods related to editing and managing vector datasets,
§ Familiarity with GIS methods related to viewing and displaying raster datasets (i.e., DEMs and imagery),
§ Knowledge of Microsoft Office 2000 (Excel, Word and Access) and Microsoft XP Pro,
§ General knowledge of physical environmental processes as they relate to landforms and hazard related physical processes (e.g., slope stability, flood plains, meander belts),
§ Excellent documentation and communication skills
§ Ability to adapt to the daily challenges associated with a busy work environment and manage competing priorities.
§ Able to travel to sites not serviced by public transportation
Salary: $18.78 – $23.48 per hour based on a 35 hours per week
