Duties:

The duties of the Senior GIS Mapping Technician while under the general direction of the Coordinator, of the Topographic Mapping Section are to technically lead and direct internal and contract staff involved in the maintenance of the Nova Scotia Topographic Database (NSTDB) in support of the Geomatics Centre’s mandate and workplan. From the Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre in Amherst, the successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out flight planning and photo control activities, performing complex manipulation of digital files using a variety of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other software applications. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing and maintaining technical specifications, manages NSTDB related research and development projects, consulting and liaising with contractors to ensure correct interpretation and adherence to specifications and guidelines, technical report writing and evaluations.

Qualifications:

Grade XII plus graduation from a recognized technical college with a diploma in one of the Geomatics Sciences plus 6 years related experience in a Geomatics work environment, or an equivalent combination of training & experience..

Knowledge and experience in the topographic mapping and orthophotomapping process are essential.  The candidate requires familiarity with programming concepts and an extensive knowledge of GIS and related database applications. A sound knowledge of Windows XP/Professional operating systems and software including:

GIS – ArcGis/ArcInfo/ArcView, other GIS applications
Word Processing – WordPerfect, MS Word
Database Software – MS Access, Excel

The incumbent must possess; the ability to adapt to changing technologies, methodologies and software applications, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups.  The successful candidate must be self-motivated, exercise sound judgment, possess good planning, organization and analytical skills with the ability to set priorities and meet stringent deadlines while managing multiple ongoing tasks. The ability to work independently in a multifaceted environment with minimal supervision, to work in a team environment, to interact with outside organizations and the general public in a professional manner are necessary. Attention to detail and good time management skills are essential.  Experience in Visual Basic, Python or SQL would be considered an asset. Occasional travel throughout the Province is required within this work environment, along with a valid driver’s license.

Classification Range:   TE 22

Salary Range: $44,201 – $51,981
