Education

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a Masters degree in anthropology or archaeology.
    Proof of education will be required prior to appointment.

Experience

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Experience is required in EACH of the following:
Recent and significant experience designing and conducting archaeology field inventories, assessments and evaluations in Western Canada.
Recent and significant supervising field crews in the conduct of archaeological work.
Recent and significant experience managing archaeological projects.
Recent and significant experience writing archaeological project reports and publications.
Experience analysing cultural resource information using computer databases.
Experience making presentations to professional and public audiences.
Experience recruiting and supervising professional and support staff.
Experience working with stakeholders, other governments, educational institutions, heritage groups and First Nations on projects related to cultural resource management.

Recent and significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience that would have normally been acquired by playing a lead or major role in the management of archaeological projects, over a period of approximately three (3) years within the past five (5) years.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Willingness to undergo a Reliability Status security clearance.
Possession of a valid Driver’s license OR personal mobility to the extent normally associated with the possession of a valid Driver’s license.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Work under adverse conditions and/or inclement weather, in isolated field locations for up to 3 months in a given year as required.
Travel and work in remote locations.
Handle and carry artefacts, soil and equipment up to the weight of 30 kg.

Work Environment

The Western and Northern Service Centre of the Parks Canada Agency is a network of professional and technical expertise established to support National Parks, National Historic Sites and National Marine Conservation Areas in Western and Northern Canada in the protection and presentation of cultural and natural resources.

Challenge

The Archaeologist III (Senior Archaeologist), reporting to the Manager of Cultural Resource Services, will be a lead archaeologist for Parks Canada projects located in Alberta and British Columbia, and potentially in other parts of western and northern Canada. This will involve designing, managing, conducting, and reporting on archaeological projects including inventories, excavations, impact assessments and archaeological analysis for national parks and national historic sites. The Senior Archaeologist will work with field units to explain and apply the research results to cultural resource management and heritage presentation programmes at the national parks and national historic sites. The Senior Archaeologist will work in team situations to provide effective identification, evaluation, management, protection and presentation of cultural resources to field unit and national office clients within Parks Canada. The position will also involve supervision of seasonal and term staff.
