Business Unit Information
Our firefighters provide a wide range of services to The City, to make us one of Canada’s top emergency response departments in fire and injury prevention, while promoting community safety.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Planning and Research, this position provides leadership to the Calgary Fire Department’s GIS Mapping Unit. The Supervisor of Fire GIS Mapping and Analysis will ensure new GIS technologies and techniques, as they pertain to Fire GIS issues, are implemented and maintained; and that GIS Mapping and Analysis Services are delivered to the Calgary Fire Department’s many divisions. 

Specific duties include:
– supervise and coordinate mapping team staff;
– monitor work flow and production of work completed by the GIS mapping unit;
– technical management of GIS products and service including research and development of new tools;
– ensure consistent approach and methodology for projects;
– monitor resource requirements;
– data management modeling and analysis;
– lead GIS projects and analysis for CFD;
– liaise with clients and project managers in assessing needs and developing solutions for GIS mapping requirements;
– assist in overall Divisional and Department business and project planning;
– participate in corporate initiatives and ensure industry best practices are communicated and supported.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (Geography, GIS, Geomatics, Engineering, Planning) plus a minimum of four years related experience that includes planning analysis and implementation, problem solving, system integration, and a strong understanding of spatial analysis and statistics. Previous experience in project management and staff supervision is required.  Advanced proficiency working with the ESRI ArcGIS suite of products and FME, and a clear understanding of cartography design is also required.  The successful applicant will have well developed technical, project management and communication skills.  An understanding of how the Corporation of the City of Calgary works and the ability to coach, mentor, and train junior staff is a must.  Experience working with Fire View, Scripting Languages such as VBA and VBScript, Oracle SQL, QA / QC tools, and Microstation would be an asset.
