Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator (Northern Alberta)

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), Northern Alberta Chapter, is seeking a dynamic, team player with a passion for wilderness and CPAWS’ mission. One of Canada’s oldest non-profit conservation groups, CPAWS works to establish new protected wilderness areas and to ensure the ecological integrity of existing ones.

The Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator will work within a staff team of five to fulfill CPAWS Northern Alberta’s conservation mission. This individual will take the lead in enhancing our Chapter’s grassroots operations by integrating community outreach and volunteer development with other program areas (i.e. campaigns, fund development, membership development). In doing so, the Coordinator will help ensure that CPAWS’ campaigns and key messages are known and supported in the broader community.

Responsibilities:
In assuming leadership for the overall management of the volunteer and outreach components of the Chapter, the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator will:

1. Coordinate the Chapter’s outreach program.
Objective: Represent CPAWS Northern Alberta and build relationships with volunteers, donors/members, media, businesses, general audiences and fellow ENGOs.

– Oversee chapter’s public website—post updates, ensure functionality, track hits
– Organize, coordinate and implement Chapter events (e.g. annual special event, media events, donor appreciation event, etc.)
– Produce 2 Chapter newsletters per year with the assistance of volunteers and staff
– Coordinat e Chapter updates for the National newsletter
– Send out monthly Conservation Net e-newsletter to update members and supporters on CPAWS activities
– Send out media releases
– Liaise with and advise WOW! Education Team
– Liaise with CPAWS National and appropriately represent the Chapter.

2. Coordinate the Chapter’s volunteer program.
Objective: Take initiative on developing an efficiently run volunteer program (includes volunteer recruitment, tracking, training, leadership development, and appreciation).

– Ensure volunteer work plans add value to the Chapter’s work
– Diversify current volunteer base; lead volunteer committees
– Track volunteers and their hours; maintain volunteer database
– Develop leadership in volunteers
– Implement volunteer appreciation program
– Send out monthly volunteer e-newsletter to update volunteers on Chapter activities and upcoming volunteer opportunities

3. Facilitate further development and revision of volunteer and outreach plans.

4.Contribute to the efficient running and maintenance of the Chapter office.
– Ensure that the office is clean and presentable
– Handle/re-route calls, walk-in traffic, e-mail, bank deposits, etc.
– Maintain office databases (e.g. media, news articles, etc.)
– Supervise office volunteers to ensure success (i.e. maintain office network, etc.)

5. Advise the Executive Director on issues and challenges the volunteer and outreach programs face. Carry out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director in a timely and cooperative manner.

Qualifications:
– A self-starter willing to contribute ideas and who has a passion for Alberta Wilderness
– Ability to prioritize and work independently
– Demonstrate a mature, flexible attitude; be open to change, innovation and a fast-paced environment
– Possess excellent computer knowledge with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop (or equivalent) and data management skills
– Leadership experience and demonstrated team-building skills
– Proven organizational and management skills
– The successful candidate should have excellent public presentation and interpersonal skills and be able to work with key supporters in a non-profit environment
– Excellent verbal and written communications skills
– Website maintenance experience would be an asset
– Marketing or fundraising experience would be an asset
– This position entails working at the Edmonton office and occasional travel to represent the Chapter. Occasional evening and weekend work will be necessary.

Position will remain open until filled

Start date : March 24, 2008 is preferred

Details: 4 days a week (32 hours) or greater depending on candidate

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications
