South Nation Conservation is one of 36 Conservation Authorities in Ontario. Conservation Authorities are community-based environmental organizations dedicated to conserving, restoring, developing and managing natural resources on a watershed level.
Job description:
The incumbent will work closely with the Director of Fisheries, the GIS Specialist and fisheries staff to input and assist with geospatial fisheries data. The successful candidate will gain experience in use of a Geographic Information System relevant to fisheries data as collected and used by Conservation Authority staff.
Major Tasks:
* To assist in the creation, editing, and maintenance of GIS spatial and attribute data, as directed.
* To create versioned backups of projects in progress and those completed.
* To maintain records of the steps and methods used in the creation and editing of data.
* To report any irregularities or errors encountered during the editing of datasets to the GIS Specialist.
* To prepare summary reports that incorporate GIS in the form of mapping, tables and text for analytical purposes, as directed.
* To communicate with GIS team members and other SNC staff on technical issues.
* All duties must be performed in accordance with SNC Safety Policy and Procedures, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
* Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Qualifications:
* Enrolled in a post secondary program such as Geography, Biology, Environmental Studies, or related discipline
* Strong working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS software (ArcMap, ArcCatalog). GIS and database management experience preferred.
* General knowledge of the use of GIS related to drainage basins, conservation, and natural resources.
* Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office).
* Good report writing, research, and analytical skills.
* Effective communication skills – comfortable speaking in public / peer group settings.
* Relate well to both team-oriented and independent situations.
* WHMIS certification, CPR & First Aid training.
* Willingness to travel for training opportunities and work occasionally on weekends and/or evenings, if necessary.
* Must have reliable transportation to our rural office.
