Hours of Work: This position works a standard 35 hour work week.

Business Unit Information:

Calgary Transit carries over 89 million customers each year. The organization plans, designs and operates Calgary’s public transportation system including a growing fleet of buses, LRT network and accessible public transportation for people with disabilities.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager of Safety and Security, Calgary Transit, the Environmental Technologist is responsible for developing, coordinating, communicating and delivering a variety of environmental programs at Calgary Transit. The successful incumbent will liaise with other levels of government, industry and the general public, including participating on corporate and business unit level committees and teams.

Specific duties include:
– coordinate and manage Calgary Transit’s ISO 14001 environmental management system;
– develop, coordinate, communicate and work with Calgary Transit staff to deliver environmental programs for Calgary Transit;
– develop environmental programs and manage day-to-day environmental issues (e.g. hazardous material management, emergency spill response and reporting, air emissions, waste water management and recycling);
– coordinate environmental audits and periodic assessments for Calgary

Transit’s facilities;
– assist Calgary Transit in meeting or exceeding Federal and Provincial Regulations and other industry requirements;
– develop, coordinate and implement environmental programs for Calgary Transit;
– deliver environmental training to employees such as spill training, EnviroSystem awareness, hazardous material/waste handling, and new employee orientation.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must possess a certificate or diploma (equivalent to 2-3 years full-time study) in Environmental Management, Environmental Technology or related field and a minimum of three years experience in environmental management, occupational health, natural or environmental sciences, chemistry or environmental engineering.
