This vacancy is in the GIS Section of the Engineering Department and the recruitment process will focus on the qualifications, experience, skills and abilities associated with Geomatics activities and tasks identified in the job description. The primary focus will be utilizing the ArcGIS to assist with a variety of geospatial projects.
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
GIS SECTION Wage: $20.80 per hour
Pay Grade: 5
Bargaining Unit Position
Under the direction of a Technician, assists in a variety of surveying or geomatics duties including survey field work, engineering calculations, GIS compilation and CAD drawing preparation. A supervisor issues detailed instructions on all but very routine duties and frequently inspects work during progress and upon completion.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
– Assists a Survey Technician on field or office projects.
– Assist in the GIS section on GIS projects as required
– Maintain equipment as appropriate
– Uses a computer to download survey data and produce CAD plans and maps.
– Use of AutoCAD software to produce civil engineering drawings.
– Assist in the use of ESRI GIS software to compile Saanich mapping and data layers as required
– Use of GPS hardware and software to collect Saanich data
– Use of spreadsheet software to perform engineering analysis.
– Perform basic mathematical calculations related to a variety of engineering software programs.
– Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES ON THE JOB:
– Working knowledge of surveying or computer mapping instruments, methods and principles.
– Knowledge of basic civil engineering principles and field survey and/or GIS mapping techniques.
– Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or ESRI GIS and survey software.
– Working knowledge of spreadsheet software.
– Ability to read and interpret survey and engineering plans and specifications.
– Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

REQUIREMENTS:
– Completion of 1 year post secondary education
– Enrolment in a full time post secondary education program is mandatory.
– Preference will be given for those enrolled in a Geomatics or Engineering Program at a University or Technical Institution.
– A valid B.C. driver’s licence.
– Physically fit to perform field duties.
– One month work experience.
