Duties:

The Coordinator of Aboriginal and Intergovernmental Relations reports to the Director of Policy and will assist in the management and implementation of government’s approach to Aboriginal initiatives. In particular, this will include the coordination of bi-lateral and tri party initiatives, on going liaison with Aboriginal communities, organizations and governments and liaison with provincial governments and federal departments.

This position is also responsible for defining, planning, organizing and managing assigned tasks, including anticipating meeting requirements and developing work plans to ensure the appropriate engagement of provincial and federal departments and Aboriginal representatives. The incumbent will co ordinate provincial participation in meetings with National Aboriginal Leaders and meetings of Ministers responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, as well as Premiers.

The Coordinator implements and maintains an effective working relationship with federal, provincial and territorial governments and Aboriginal officials, as well as facilitates and manages linkages with Aboriginal communities. The Coordinator must ensure that Nova Scotia interests and concerns are clearly presented. The nature of the job requires an individual who can conceptualize, articulate and respond to the complex interplay of federal, provincial and Aboriginal policies and activities.

Qualifications:

Post secondary university degree (preferably Masters level) in Social Sciences, Public Administration or Business Administration, plus extensive experience working with communities and organizations in terms of social and economic development and working within governmental forums and committees. Excellent communications skills, superior writing, public speaking and presentation skills, are required. Ability to work in a complex, multi issue team environment with competing demands and priorities. Experience working with Aboriginal communities and organizations is preferred.

Knowledge of various provincial government departments and agencies and their mandates and use of methods and techniques to manage competing expectations and interests, in order to gain consensus on issues. Knowledge of Aboriginal policy, social and economic issues and Aboriginal perspectives. Knowledge of community development principles and practices.

Working knowledge of computer software programs, internet and electronic mail to communicate and exchange information with other federal or provincial government departments, Aboriginal organizations and external stakeholders.

The Coordinator must be a self-starter and must undertake responsibility for implementation of major community and intergovernmental liaison initiatives. Ability to communicate and resolve a wide range of multi dimensional sensitive issues within multi-party forums will be necessary.

Preference will be given to those individuals of Aboriginal descent.


Classification: MCP 20

Salary Range: $57,519 – $74,775
