This position is being offered through the Summer Female Mentorship Program. This program assists female post-secondary students who are studying in an area where women are under-represented to gain experience in their field. To be eligible, candidates must be full-time female university, community college or recognized trade school students returning to study in the fall in fields where women are under-represented. Duties:

The Forestry GIS Section is working to unearth and expose its vast collection of digital data related to forestry in Nova Scotia. This placement will directly support this process through consultation with clients; design, development and completion of data migration strategies; contribution to the design of data warehousing solutions; and web sites employing special GIS technology. This consultative, communication-driven process demands good communication skills combined with the technical ability to enable solutions for our clients.

NSDNR’s Forestry GIS Section offers its students an independent yet supportive environment in which to face realistic challenges and develop solutions using leading edge technology. The successful candidate can anticipate working with ArcInfo, ArcGIS Desktop and Server, ArcIMS and Oracle, as well as other industry standard tools. We support on-the-job skills acquisition and training.

Qualifications:

In addition to the requirements for the program identified above, the position requires formal training in GIS, and preferably experience with at least one programming language, database use, and the development of web pages.

Rate of Pay: $13.00/hour
