The Corporate Services division is seeking a qualified, enthusiastic individual to fill the fulltime position of GIS Technician. Reporting to the Manager of Information Services, the GIS Technician will assist the GIS Team in the maintenance of the Town’s geographical information database and other related functions and activities. This position will primarily be responsible for data conversion, updating, cartography and product presentation.
Position Responsibilities Include:
- Perform data conversion procedures to ensure data in GIS is current and accurate for utility infrastructure including curb lines, edge of road for pavement, manholes, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water mains, water valves, fire hydrants, gas lines, recreational areas, pathways etc.
- Provide support services needed to develop and maintain an effective organization wide Geographic Information System such as GIS layer maintenance and quality control.
- Assist other Town departments with GIS related projects and requests as they arise.
- Develop and/or update mapping GIS products to be sold or distributed both internally and externally.
- In conjunction with the Information Systems technical team, ensure that the Town’s GIS remains in excellent operation to maintain a high level of customer service for reliability and confidence for users of the system.
- Maintain constructive relationships with internal customers and suppliers.
- Consistently model the organization’s corporate values of customer service, continuous improvement and learning, healthy and safe work environment, participation, accountability, open communication and fun.
Position Qualifications Include:
- Post-secondary education from an accredited institution including a diploma/degree in GIS applications from a college or technical school. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of GIS principles and practices.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, ArcView, other GIS and database applications and Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team yet is able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of cartographic design and theory.
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
- Concern for detail and accuracy and effective organizational skills.
