Opportunity:

The Archaeology Branch’s mandate is to encourage and facilitate the protection and conservation of British Columbia’s archaeological resources in accordance with the provisions of the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA).

The Archaeological Permitting and Assessment Section of the Branch administers a permit system under the HCA, represents archaeological resource interests on working groups established under the Environmental Assessment Act(EAA), and provides archaeological resource input to the development of Land and Water Use Plans.

The position is one of six reporting to the Manager, Permitting and Assessment Section. Under the limited direction of the Manager, and in accordance with the provisions of the HCA, this position is accountable for providing expert guidance for the protection and conservation of archaeological resources in the province. Key linkages include: professional archaeological consultants for permit applications and permit report reviews; Branch clients (industry, property owners, First Nations) for permit application reviews, resource management direction, and consultation with First Nations; Environmental Assessment Office for resource management direction, and permitting requirements for development proponents; and policing authorities, Crown counsels and Coroner’s Offices for alleged violations of the HCA and incidents of accidentally found human remains not of forensic interest.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, or anthropology with a specialization in archaeology. Preferably a related Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of post-graduate training and experience. Requires at least two years of practical experience in archaeological resource management subsequent to graduation. Requires specialized knowledge of the discipline of archaeology and the field of archaeological resource management, as well as a practical understanding of the HCA and EAA. Familiarity with Branch programs, policies and procedures is desirable.

Requires ability to represent archaeological resource interests on multi-disciplinary planning and assessment study teams; exercise discretion and tact in negotiations and communications on controversial issues; work under tight timelines and exercise initiative and judgement in an environment with multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities; and communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.

Travel is a requirement.
