JOB SUMMARY: To manage a team of cartographers responsible for mapping of child development outcomes via the Early Development Instrument, community assets, and socio-economic data.
Major responsibilities include:
- providing leadership in the development of community mapping and EDI activities;
- developing strategies and protocols for data collection and analysis, report writing and dissemination;
- hiring, training, and supervising team of cartographers; negotiating contract work; monitoring workload;
- identifying, prioritizing and assigning tasks; forecasting staff and resource requirements;
- preparing work plans; monitoring and reporting progress; assisting in budget development and cost projections;
- managing GIS facilities and administration details; assisting in writing research proposals;
- identifying data quality issues;
- ensuring ethics, data agreements, data handling agreements, and other relevant paperwork are accurately drafted;
- maintaining relationship and licensing agreement with Statistics Canada; extracting data from existing databases;
- ensuring confidentiality of data is maintained;
- identifying and pursuing suggestions for new data partners;
- acting as a liaison;
- presenting and documenting results;
- overseeing the development of resources;
- supervising research staff and ensuring accuracy of work;
- performing cross-sectional statistical analyses of data;
- conducting spatial data analyses;
- advising on design/presentation of maps and preparing outcome maps;
- writing and preparing content for website;
- designing, delivering and promoting ongoing community based learning and development; providing guidance and mentoring in developing local mapping expertise;
- identifying training and staff needs;
- providing technological expertise and advising community organizations
- providing research support and methodological advice;
- acting as a resource; and
- performing other related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters degree in geography or related discipline or equivalent professional designation plus minimum four years cartography and research experience and two years supervisory and/or teaching experience.
- Knowledge and competency in GIS and data visualization.
- Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
- Knowledge of population health, and the relationship between neighbourhood characteristics and child development an asset.
- Computer experience required (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SPSS).
- Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
- Proven ability to work successfully with a wide range of groups and individuals, including community groups, researchers, the public sector and multiple levels of government.
