LifeCycles is a registered non-profit organization which aims to cultivate awareness and initiate action around food, health, and urban sustainability.
The HEAL Project weaves traditional food knowledge to revitalize food practice. The primary objective is to build capacity in the community to restore traditional food practice and increase food skill. A web of strategic collaborative partners ensure the strength of success, resources and long term sustainability of empowering the community in a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of diabetes, increase fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity and to reduce obesity.
The HEAL Coordinator will work with LifeCycles staff and the Aboriginal Health Team, Vancouver Island Health Authority. The Diabetes’ Nurses/Dietitians and Psychologist will provide a 2 week training program to the HEAL Coordinator with continued monthly follow up and support visits. LifeCycles and the Aboriginal Team will work with the coordinator to support and deliver the activities in their communities.
Term: January 2008-on-going
Renumeration: full-time 35hrs/week @ $20/hr
* Aboriginal Applicants only
* Confident verbal communications in person/phone
* Experience/interest in organizing groups of people for regular activities and events
* Experience/interest in physical activity, nutrition, cooking, and food gardening
* Experience using computers
* Valid drivers license and access to a car preferable but not necessary
Responsibilities:
* The role of the HEAL Coordinator will be to empower and collaborate with the urban Aboriginal community to develop programming that will build the capacity within the urban aboriginal community to prevent diabetes.
* The urban Aboriginal HEAL Coordinator will participate and receive comprehensive training about Type 2 Diabetes prevention and work with the Aboriginal Health Diabetes Team, LifeCycles Gardening expert and other community based projects to raise awareness about diabetes.
* Will develop community based programming and a workplan that will support lifestyle choices and opportunities that will help prevent diabetes: (gardens, connections to traditional activities like wild food gathering, food harvesting/cooking methods, elders, community kitchens, food skills and health circles/fairs etc).
* Delivery of community based food and health programming that involves a min. of 20 families a month.
* Organize and coordinate the annual Community celebration, evaluation and planning session in March.
