Summary:
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is a national nonprofit organization advocating healthier lifestyles by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. After helping create more than 13,000 miles of rail-trail over the last 20 years, RTC has an ambitious goal for the future: by 2020, 90 percent of Americans will live within three miles of a trail system. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in the Northeast, the Midwest, the West and Florida.
 
Job Location:
This position is located in our national office in downtown Washington, D.C., three blocks from the White House, and is easily accessible to the Metro red, orange, and blue lines.
 
Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology, the GIS Technician will be processing, digitizing and analyzing field data from a variety of sources utilizing existing quality control techniques; is responsible for updating and populating RTC’s geodatabase in ArcSDE(managed remotely); assists RTC staff in using ArcGIS 9.X applications and provides technical support, and also provides reports and cartographic support for other GIS projects as directed by management. The GIS Technician’s main duties will be to provide direct support in the digitizing phases for RTC’s open, project and corridor rail-trails as outlined in RTC’s mapping initiative.

Other duties may include: generating custom SQL queries and reports with spatial analysis of location, relationships, and proximity of source data, securing additional source data for rail-trails, including aerial photography, as necessary, in order to assist with the various phases of RTC’s mapping initiative.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None, this position will report to the Director of Information Technology.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:
Excellent knowledge of GIS concepts and considerable experience in ESRI’s ArcGIS 8.X or 9.X environments.  Demonstrated experience with data processing and spatial analysis techniques. Knowledge of geodatabase models including file-based geodatabases. Proficiency in GPS and field data collection. Familiarity with ArcSDE, editing within geodatabases using ArcEditor and the ability to create custom SQL queries is highly desirable.

Must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, high energy, the ability to communicate in both verbal and written form (with technical and non-technical users), be self-motivated, meet deadlines, work well with others and independently under pressure, and possess innovative problem solving skills. Previous GIS training experience is also highly desirable.

Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering or Computer Science and 2 years work experience using GIS in ESRI’s ARCGIS 8.X or 9.X environments.  Familiarity with geo-spatial analysis and report generation. Verifiable ability to create cartographic maps for reports and presentations.

Work Environment:
Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
