Salary : $64,268 to $74,250 per annum
Ecological land classification maps form the foundation for land and resource planning, wildlife habitat conservation and management, and environmental assessment. The Yukon is in the early stages of developing a biophysical classification and mapping framework.
Located in the Department of Environment, this position will lead a multi-disciplinary team of professionals in completing the development of the framework and in implementing an ecological classification and mapping program. The Department is seeking an experienced individual with a well-developed understanding of biophysical classification and mapping principles coupled with theoretical and practical knowledge in ecology, particularly landscape ecology. The ideal candidate will have worked extensively with biophysical data, including spatial data. The job will require an ability to assess the state of ecological classification and mapping in the Yukon, including user needs. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential to maintain positive inter-departmental relationships. Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Yukon landscapes is important. On occasion, this position will need to work outdoors and away from home in various weather conditions and travel by small aircraft, 4X4 truck, boat and ATV.

- University degree in environmental sciences or related field, including physical geography, ecology or natural resources.
- Experience working in ecological land classification and mapping.
- Experience working with and managing digital biophysical (vegetation, soils, terrain) data.
- Experience working with spatial data and making maps.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team to achieve a common goal.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and oversee biophysical mapping projects.
- Experience developing work plans and managing budgets and contracts.
Candidates with an equivalent combination of coursework and extensive experience in the areas noted above will be equally considered.
Condition(s) of Employment: Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
Job Requirement(s): Some travel within and outside the territory.
A one year eligibility list will be established from this competition to fill future vacancies for identical positions and may also be used for similar positions within the department.
