STATUS: Auxiliary term position (October through December, 2007)
SUMMARY:
An excellent work term opportunity exists in CRD Regional Planning for a self-motivated senior postsecondary student. The successful applicant will provide research and technical support in the broad areas of regional land use planning, growth management, transportation modelling, and regional information and research.
Under the direction of senior staff, the successful applicant may be involved in projects such as the Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) 5-year review, Regional Transportation Model, Urban Growth Model and the RGS Monitoring Program. The position may include tasks such as:
- Geographic Information System (GIS) support
- Data collection, manipulation, analysis, and presentation
- Liaising with municipalities and other agencies
- Research and analysis (including literature reviews)
- Preparation of reports, fact sheets, articles and other information for Web and hard copy publication
- General departmental support (including responding to enquires from the public; assisting with planning committees)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified applicants will have completed (or currently be enrolled in) senior post secondary training in areas such as Urban & Regional Planning, Transportation Modelling, Geographic Information Systems, Urban Geography, Environmental Studies, or Ecological Economics. Applicants should have strong technical skills using Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS), spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel), and relational databases (Microsoft Access). Applicants will also have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to write clearly and concisely.
The successful applicant should possess excellent research, analysis, time management, and organizational skills, and be able to work under limited supervision. A keen interest in growth management, smart growth, transportation planning, environmental issues and sustainability is desirable.
