Evergreen is seeking an energetic individual with an interest in community development to assist Evergreen’s Manager of Community Development in delivering programming at a number of sites linked to social service agencies, including the Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Community Garden. This contract position starts at the beginning of September and ends November 15th 2007.
Applicants must be able to register at Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training (Aboriginal, Inuit or Métis background) and have been recently unemployed or underemployed, please self identify in your application.
Main Areas of Responsibility:
Reporting to the Manager of Community Development, the Community Development Coordinator will:
- Engage and involve clients of social service agencies involved in Evergreen’s “Growing Opportunities” project in volunteer plantings and garden maintenance events and educational workshops;
- coordinate Assist Evergreen staff with the organization of planting and garden education activities that promote Aboriginal cultures at other Evergreen garden sites;
- Oversee gardening activities at community garden sites– from planting through to harvest;
- Assist with developing resource material
Qualifications:
- Experience working with marginalized populations such as at-risk youth
- Good communication skills – both written and verbal;
- Group facilitation skills
- Interest in food security, nutrition and food education;
- Knowledge of or interest in, traditional Aboriginal plant uses; horticulture; landscaping and/or native plants an asset.
- Background in social service work, teaching, community development an asset.
- Organized, creative and able to work independently;
- Basic familiarity with computers (MS Word);
- Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings;
This full time position is subject to the availability of government funding. Salary: $413 per week.
