Goal of Department: The Lands & Resources Department plays a lead role in protecting and ensuring maximum sustainable and respectful use of traditional lands and natural resources, and to safeguard treaty and aboriginal rights and title throughout the whole of FNFN treaty territory for future generations.
The Lands & Resources Department offers a supportive, dynamic teamwork environment with room to grow. We handle 500-1000 gas referrals/year primarily during the winter; and 30-40 forestry and pesticide referrals during the spring & summer.
Administration Duties
1. Manage GIS and mapping activities with oversight from the Director.
2. Collaborate with Treaty 8 Tribal Association’s GIS Department.
3. Maintain GIS software, hardware, digital data library and map library to the highest standards.
4. Ability to independently manage priorities, time, schedules.
Liaison
1. Facilitate collection and analysis of cultural and environmental information with traditional land users. This can include harvesting areas, shelter, burial sites, minerals, trails, wildlife and wildlife habitat, forests, water resources, creeks and rivers and archeology.
2. Participate with industry and government agencies in project planning processes to meet FNFN’s needs and priorities.
Research
1. Develop workplan to “grow” a successful GIS department through innovative research methods and best practices; initiate new projects to meet the ongoing and future needs of FNFN.
2. Work directly with the Director of Lands & Resources (L&R) to provide advice and guidance to Ft. Nelson First Nation Chief and Council on issues, infringement of aboriginal and treaty rights and mitigation recommendations.
3. Assist in maintaining an ongoing inventory of natural resources, and impacts to them, throughout the FNFN’s traditional territory.
4. Keep informed and current on developments and impacts that may affect FNFN lands, resources and people.

Minimum Requirements
1. Preferably completion of a GIS post-secondary program from a recognized institution plus at least four years of experience; demonstrated interest in environmental and natural resource issues and problem-solving.
2. Personal skills include ability to work with community members, all levels of government, and industry in a professional manner. Must be willing to adapt to opportunities, emergencies, and able to handle intense work periods.
3. Ability to work up to 35 hours/week on a flexible basis
4. Familiarity with working with First Nations, an understanding of Treaty 8 and aboriginal rights, and government/industry consultation processes as they apply to First Nations.
